Caption: Great Rift Valley, volcanic uplift. Satellite radar image showing small surface displacements (coloured fringes) for the Longonot volcano, in the Kenyan section of the Great Rift Valley. These changes, not visible to the naked eye, were obtained by the ASAR (Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar) instrument on ESA's Envisat satellite. The fringe patterns are obtained using SAR Interferometry (InSAR). In the background is Suswa volcano. This study showed that between 2004 and 2006 the Longonot volcano experienced an uplift of around 9 centimetres. Mount Longonot (2776 metres) last erupted in the 1860s.
