Caption: The left eye of a 67 year old male, showing symptoms of conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis results from inflammation of the conjunctiva, the delicate outermost layer of the eye, and appears as a reddening of the white of the eye to varying degrees. The condition can be caused by viral infection, bacterial infection or chemical trauma; it can also be an allergic reaction. In most cases it is a self-limiting condition that resolves within a few days. The picture shows conjunctivitis 48hrs after accidental splashing of droplets of insecticide into the eye. The main inflammation is in the lower sac of the conjuctiva, and central. Unnoticed for 24 hours, the condition was not treated and resolved itself 2 days after this picture was taken
