Caption: Sebastian Cabot (c.1474-1557), Italian explorer. Cabot sailed with his brother on the voyage to America made by their father John Cabot in 1497. This was the first contact by Europeans with the North American mainland since the Vikings, though the Cabots believed that they had found Asia. Sebastian made another voyage to North America in 1508, and in 1525, in the service of Spain, he explored the coast of Brazil. This artwork, based on an original painting by Hans Holbein the Younger (destroyed in 1845), is from 'Memoirs of Bristol' (1821-23) by the British clergyman and antiquarian Samuel Seyer (1757-1831).
