Johannes Gutenberg (c.1398-1468), German printer and publisher. Gutenberg's development of moveable type, combined with his printing press, allowed the mass production of printed books, leading to a revolution in book publishing in Europe. This artwork is from 'A Dictionary of Typography' (1875) by the British printer, editor and author John Southward (1840-1902). This work was first published in book form in 1872. Southward was at the time one of the leading authorities on the history of printing.
