Caption: Medieval scholar. 16th-centry woodcut artwork of a pensive scribe and scholar surrounded by books and papers. This artwork is from a 1509 edition of 'Historia ex Trogo Pompeio', by the Roman historian Justin (Marcus Junianus Justinus) who lived in around the 2nd century AD. This work, much reproduced in the medieval period, was itself (indicated by the title) a collection of earlier writings by the 1st century BC Roman historian Pompeius Trogus.
