Caption: Rover landing site final candidates. Topographical image of the Martian surface showing the final four landing site candidates (black dots) for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission. The surface is colour-coded according to height; red ground is highest, through orange, yellow and green, to blue (lowest). The locations of previous rovers are also shown. MSL will deliver the Curiosity rover to Mars to determine if Mars is, or was ever, able to support microbial life. The Gale Crater (right) is the chosen landing site. Image obtained by the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter onboard the Mars Global Surveyor.
