This photograph was taken in 1967 during the Smallpox Eradication Program taking place in West Africa. Smallpox was eradicated after a successful worldwide vaccination program. The last naturally occurring case was in Somalia in 1977. Rothstein worked on this program in West Africa from 1966 to 1971.
