Caption: REX-ISOLDE miniball detector, CERN. REX-ISOLDE is the Radioactive beam experiment at ISOLDE (On Line Isotope Mass Separator) based at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. ISOLDE produces beams of unstable isotopes of atomic nuclei, which emit gamma rays as they decay. The miniball uses germanium (Ge) detectors to measure the gamma ray spectra of the nuclei, providing information on their structure and lifetime. ISOLDE started operations in 1967 and is still in use in 2007. Photographed in June 2005.
