Caption: Lateral flow testing. Lateral flow test devices are test kits designed to detect the presence of a specific chemical or substance. Examples include pregnancy tests, though many other tests using the same technique are also available. The underlying principle is an immunoassay analysis, where the sample moves along the test substrate by capillary action. When the sample reaches points on the substrate impregnated with antibodies or antigens, coloured lines are formed indicating a positive or negative result. Sample windows (round) are next to result line windows (rectangular: T, test; C, control).
