Caption: Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand, composite satellite image. This is the largest active volcano in New Zealand, and one of the most active in the world. Eruptions often cause lahars (volcanic mudflows) when crater lakes breach their walls and water and pyroclastic material flow down the mountainside. Image produced by combining data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission onboard Space Shuttle Endeavour with data from the Landsat satellite.
