Caption: Maize stem. Polarised light micrograph of a section through the stem of a maize (corn, Zea mays) plant. The outer epidermis has a hypodermis of thick-walled cells of sclerenchyma (red). Next are two rings of supporting vascular bundles within the central parenchyma tissue (dark). Each vascular bundle is made up of surrounding thick-walled cells of supporting fibres - facing outwards is the phloem, and facing inwards to the stem is the xylem. Magnification: x1 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
