Frank A. Perret (1867-1943), US geophysicist. Perret initially studied physics and worked in the electrical engineering industry. He then travelled to Italy in the early 1900s and developed an interest in volcanology. He observed the 1906 eruption of Vesuvius and also studied other volcanoes. With others, including Thomas A. Jaggar, he visited Kilauea, Hawaii, in 1909. Perret was a research associate at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution from 1931 to 1943. This photograph, which dates from 16 October 1909, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
