Caption: John Purroy Mitchel (1879-1918), mayor of New York, using a telephone. Mitchel studied at Columbia University and then graduated in 1901 from the New York Law School. He led investigations into several politicians, and then entered politics himself. He was a reformer and was elected as part of what was known as the Fusion Party. He served as mayor of New York City from 1914 to 1917, losing his bid for re-election. He died while training as a pilot for World War I. This photograph, which dates from 17 April 1914, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
