Caption: Disabled soldier on exercise bike. Exercise bike being used by an Italian soldier with a wounded or prosthetic leg. There is a nurse at right and a uniformed soldier at left. The disabled soldier's respiration and breathing are being monitored. This is one of many rehabilitation exercises devised following the Great War (First World War, 1914-1918) to help the large number of soldiers maimed in the conflict. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. Its photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
