Caption: Military field hospital, US Civil War. This stereographic image shows Zouave soldiers in a field hospital with amputation tools and a soldier with an injured arm. The Zouave were a unit of the Union Army, modelled on the French Zouave infantry. Photographed by New York photographer George Stacy during the US Civil War (1861-1865). Over 600,000 soldiers died during the conflict. Although early anaesthetics were available, the standards of medical care, surgical technology, and drugs, were still relatively rudimentary.
