This device is part of the equipment used to operate the KDF9, an early computer produced by the English Electric LEO (Lyons Electric Office) company. This was an advanced computer for the time, capable of 50,000 calculations a second. The Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service, began to use computers in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A KDF9 was installed in 1965 at the Met Office's headquarters in Bracknell.
