Royal Observatory, Greenwich, UK. This observatory was founded in 1675. It was the first purpose-built research institution in Britain, and for centuries was the centre of astronomical and meteorological research in the UK. This is Flamsteed House, the oldest of the Observatory's buildings, which was designed by Christopher Wren. The time ball (orange) on the roof, erected in 1833, provided the first public time signal.
