Caption: Boron salt crystals. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of crystals of boron salt. Boron salt hold a high quantity of water in their hydrated state. As such they are commonly used in the making of fire retardants, however their use is controversial as salts of boron are poisonous. Magnification: x2330 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
