Caption: Nanocellulose mat. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of nanocellulose (threads), or microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), mixed with diatomaceous earth to form a filter mat. MFC is a material composed of nanosized cellulose fibrils with a high aspect ratio (length to width ratio). Diatomaceous earth, or diatomite, is a naturally occurring soft siliceous sedimentary rock that contains a high number of fossilised diatoms (single-celled planktonic algae, spirals). Magnification: x2670 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
