Caption: Tissue culture collagen sponge. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an artificial sponge made from collagen fibres. This sponge is used to culture body tissues such as muscle, fat, or connective tissue, in a laboratory. Cells of the tissue to be grown are placed on the sponge and grow within it. Once implanted in the body the collagen is eventually absorbed. Magnification: x200 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
