Caption: Mechanical buoy, 19th-century artwork. Man in the sea riding a mechanical buoy with a sail and propellers operated by hand and foot pedals. The lower propeller provides stability, the rear one propulsion. This device was designed by a French inventor called Barathen. Artwork from the 17th volume (first period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
