Caption: Tram electrical systems, 19th-century artwork. Electrification of trams (also called streetcars) took place in the 1880s and 1890s. This diagram shows the circuitry in a tram carriage connecting the controls (upper left and upper right) with the motors (lower centre) that drove the wheels. Power was supplied by overhead cables (top), here through a pole making contact with the wire through a small wheel. An electric lighting system is also shown here. Artwork from the 17th volume (first period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
