Caption: Beech tree leaf. Light micrograph of a section through the leaf of a common beech tree (Fagus sylvatica), showing the midrib. The midrib has at its centre a horseshoe of vascular bundles, the xylem (pink files) is inward and the phloem (dark red and blue) is outward. Around the vascular ring is a thick ring of supportive sclerenchyma tissue (pink) with the ground tissue parenchyma (blue) surrounding it. The two epidermis's have thick cell walls (dark blue and red). The leaf lamina has two palisade mesophyll layers (deep red) on top of a lower spongy mesophyll layer (pink). The lower epidermis has stomata (pores). Magnification: x70, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
