Caption: Sweet pea stem. Light micrograph of a section through the hollow stem of a sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) plant, showing a ring of vascular bundles. The outer stem is covered with a thin epidermis (red) that contains stomata (pores). Under the epidermis is the cortex of chlorenchyma ground tissue composed of cells full of chloroplasts and air cavities. The vascular bundles have an outer layer of sclerenchyma tissue (brown), underneath which is the phloem (light red) with phloem tubes, parenchyma and companion cells. Next are the xylem vessels in the xylem parenchyma tissue (red). Magnification: x5 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
