Caption: Sycamore leaf in autumn. Light micrograph of a section through the stem of a leaf from a sycamore (Acer pseudoplantanus) tree in autumn. The outer stem is composed of cork and the outer leaf scales contain cork and resin to insulate the plant during winter, and to prevent insects and fungi from getting in. At the base of the leaf is the meristem, composed of a layer of phellogen (cork cambium, brownish black). Magnification: x5 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
