Caption: Gabriel Auguste Daubree (1814-1896), French geologist. Daubree trained as a mining engineer, also holding positions as professor of geology and mineralogy. Institutions he worked at included the Paris Museum of Natural History and the Ecole des Mines. He studied the geology of the Bas-Rhin (Lower Rhine) region, and experimented on the synthesis of minerals and rocks. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences, and received the Wollaston medal of the Geological Society of London. Artwork from the 18th volume (second period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
