Caption: Fram expedition to the Arctic, commanded by the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930). Nansen and his crew sailed in the Fram (top left). They entered the ice pack on 22 September 1893 and drifted westwards (black line, centre). Nansen and a companion left the Fram on 14 March 1895 and marched to a record northwards latitude of 86 degrees 14 minutes on 7 April 1895. After an epic retreat south they boarded the ship Windward on 6 August 1895, reaching Vardo, Norway, on 13 August 1896 (signed, bottom right). Published in the 18th volume (second period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
