Caption: Injection end of proton synchrotron. Scientists examine the 750 KeV Cockroft-Walton generator which provides for the initial acceleration of protons at CERN, Geneva. It is here that the protons receive their first acceleration, in the donut-shaped section on the right. All surfaces are rounded and polished to minimize the danger of sparking when such high voltages are present.
