Caption: Robert Edmond Grant (1793-1874), Scottish biologist. After qualifying as a physician Grant turned to biology. Among Grant’s students at Edinburgh University was Charles Darwin, who saw Grant’s views on evolution, which were similar to Lamarck’s, as too controversial at the time. In 1827 Grant became the first Professor of Comparative Anatomy at University College London, a post he would hold until his death. Photographed circa 1854.
