Caption: Mrs Ples skull. Cast of STS5, a fossil skull of Australopithecus africanus, discovered at Sterkfontein, South Africa, by Robert Broom and J. T. Robinson in April 1947. Known as Mrs Ples, this specimen dates from around 2 million years ago. It is not certain whether it is from a male or a female. A. africanus is one of several extinct species forming an early part of the human evolutionary tree.
