Caption: Neanderthal skull (Gibraltar 1). Cast of the Gibraltar 1 fossil of a Neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis) skull. This is sometimes named as the 'calpicus' variant of the Neanderthals. It was found in Forbes Quarry in 1848, several years before the type specimen for the Neanderthals was found in Germany in 1856. This skull was identified as Neanderthal in 1861. It dates from the Middle Palaeolithic (300,000 to 30,000 years ago).
