Caption: Pear rust fungus. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from a juniper tree infected with pear rust fungus (Gymnosporangium sabinae, lower right). This rust is a fungal heteroecious plant parasite that can be particularly damaging to pear trees, resulting in complete defoliation and destruction of the fruit crop. Teliospores (spores) infect the upper leaf and produce pycnidia (flask-shaped, piercing the upper epidermis), which then produce mycelium. The mycelium infect the cells and produce cluster cups (blue and brown) that pierce the lower epidermis and release aecidiospores (spores), which then infect other trees. Magnification: x7 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
