Caption: Titanic survivors on the Carpathia. RMS Titanic, the largest ocean liner ever built at the time, was reputed to be unsinkable. However, during its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of 14 April 1912 and sank at around 02:20 on 15 April with the loss of 1517 lives. Some 710 people survived, rescued from lifeboats by the RMS Carpathia between 04:00 and 09:00 on 15 April. Over half the survivors were women and children, with most of the first-class and second-class women and children, and the female crew, being saved. The survivors were taken to New York, arriving there on the evening of 18 April.
