Caption: Giovanni Maria Bonardo, 16th-century Italian author and aristocrat, also referred to as Fratteggiano. The circular inscription gives the Latin form of his name and refers to him as an count, knight and baron. He published on a range of subjects, including minerals, natural history and astronomy. Works included 'La minera del mondo' (1585), 'Le ricchezze dell'agricoltura' (1590), and 'Della miseria et eccellenza della vita humana, ragionamenti due' (1586). This artwork is from the 1589 edition of Bonardo's 'La grandezza, larghezza e distanza di tutte le sfere'. This work concerned the nature of the planets, stars and celestial spheres.
