Caption: Rodrigo Zamorano (1542-1623), Spanish author, translator and cosmographer. The circular inscription gives the Latin form of his name, and states that he is in his 39th year. This is when he published 'Compendio de la arte de navegar' (1581), a compendium on the art of navigation. Symbols of navigation are depicted across top. This work was republished in translated form by the English mathematician and cartographer Edward Wright in 'Certaine Errors in Navigation' (1599). Zamorano worked at the Spanish court during the reign of King Philip II. Zamorano's other works included translating Euclid's 'Elements' into Spanish in 1576.
