Caption: Titanic document. Certificate for Clearance allowing the Titanic to sail with emigrant trade on April 11, 1912, listing the number of passengers and crew. The total number, 2,208, may not be accurate, depending on the possible addition of stowaways and infants. RMS Titanic, the largest ocean liner ever built at the time, was reputed to be unsinkable. However, during its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of 14 April 1912 and sank with the loss of 1517 lives.
