Caption: Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The HST is an astronomical satellite orbiting the Earth. It observes stars, galaxies and other objects in electromagnetic radiation from infrared and ultraviolet to visible light. A collaboration between NASA and ESA, it is one of NASA's Great Observatories. Named after the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, it was launched by the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1990, and orbits at a height of around 600 kilometres. It is around 13 metres in length and 4 metres across. Power is provided by solar panels (either side), and there are two antennas (one at lower left). The aperture door (black) is at upper left.
