Caption: Communications satellite in Earth orbit, artwork. These satellites operate from a geostationary orbit 35,786 kilometres above the Earth. This allows them to rotate with the Earth, remaining stationary above the same point on the Earth's surface. Orbital corrections are carried out with a small fuel supply, with exhaust gases seen emerging from the rocket engine nozzles. Antennas (dishes) are used to transmit and receive data. Solar panels (blue) provide power. Since the 1960s, hundreds of communications satellites, both commercial and military, have been launched into orbit around the Earth.
