Caption: Mars Express mission, artwork. This European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft was launched from Earth (lower left) on 2 June 2003 to travel to Mars (upper right). Here, the spacecraft has separated from its Fregat booster (not seen) and deployed its solar panels (blue). The spacecraft's own rocket engine (nozzle seen here) was used for course corrections. Mars Express, the ESA's first Mars mission, arrived in December 2003 and entered Mars orbit. Since then, its sensors have extensively mapped Mars, transmitting images and data back to Earth using its dish antenna (centre). The mission has since been extended to at least 2014.
