Caption: Mars Express mission at Mars, artwork. This European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft was launched from Earth on 2 June 2003 to travel to Mars. Here, the spacecraft has arrived at Mars (December 2003) but not yet entered orbit as the Beagle 2 lander it is carrying (lower left of antenna) has not yet been deployed. This deployment took place on 19 December, though Beagle 2's landing failed and contact was lost. Mars Express is the ESA's first Mars mission. Its sensors have extensively mapped Mars, transmitting images and data back to Earth using the spacecraft's dish antenna. The mission has since been extended to at least 2014.
