Caption: Soyuz-2 rocket launch, artwork. This launch is taking place at the Ensemble de Lancement Soyouz (ELS) or Soyuz Launch Complex at France's Guiana Space Centre, French Guiana. This rocket is built by Arianespace for the European Space Agency. The first scheduled launches at the ELS were of the first two Galileo IOV satellites on a Soyuz-2 rocket on 20 October 2011. This is an evening launch. The four tall metal towers help protect the rocket against lightning strikes. The Soyuz-2 is a three-stage rocket capable of launching payloads of up to 7,800 kilograms to low-Earth orbit. The first Soyuz-2 launch took place in 2004.
