Caption: Arnold Orville Beckman (1900-2004), US inventor, with his wife Mabel. Beckman's first degree was in chemical engineering at the University of Illinois. He later gained his doctorate from Caltech. He had met Mabel Meinzer in 1918 and married her in 1925. In 1934, he invented a pH meter and founded National Technical Laboratories to market it. The company was later renamed Beckman Instruments and this, and his investments in transistor technology, made him extremely wealthy. He and his wife founded the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, which provides grants for science research. Photographed in November 1985.
