Caption: Breit and Wigner, US physicists. At left is Russian-born US physicist Gregory Breit (1899-1981). At right is Hungarian-US physicist Eugene Wigner (1902-1995). Both worked on quantum physics, with Breit producing the Breit equation in 1929 and Wigner publishing an algebraic symmetry theory known as the Wigner D-matrix in 1927. Wigner worked at Princeton and Breit at Yale. Together, they established the Breit–Wigner distribution (1936) concerning nuclear resonances, and this contributed much to later work by Wigner and others. Wigner was awarded a share of the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work.
