Caption: Rameses III reigned over ancient Egypt from 1187-1156 bce. He is seen here after a relief in the Temple of Medinet Habu at Thebes, returning in triumph from the first Libyan campaign. Medinet Habu is Rameses III's great funerary temple and is decorated with scenes of his battles against the sea peoples. He carried out a number of other monumental projects including additions to Karnak. He defended his country from foreign invasion in three great wars.He encouraged trade and industry, trading with the land of Punt and quarrying the copper mines at Sinai which had lain dormant. He is also thought to have exploited the gold mines of Nubia. Towards the end of his reign there was an attempted coup d'etat by one of his secondary wives. The plot was foiled and the perpetrators tried and executed.
