Caption: Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff (1852-1911), Dutch chemist. Van 't Hoff studied chemistry at Delft, Leiden, Bonn and Paris, obtaining his doctorate at Utrecht in 1874. Contributions to organic chemistry with publications on stereochemistry were followed by work on chemical kinetics, equilibria, and solutions and gases. His later career was spent at the universities of Amsterdam and Berlin. He received the first Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1901) for his work on chemical dynamics. Other honours included the Royal Society's Davy Medal (1893), the Legion of Honour (1894), and the Helmholtz Medal (1911) of the Prussian Academy of Sciences.
