Caption: Parotid salivary gland. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a parotid gland (purple), one of the salivary glands. There are two parotid glands, one each in front of the ears, between the skin and the masseter muscle (pink blocks) of the jaw. The parotid gland has two parts. The outer cortex area (purple) contains secretory glands that release saliva through central ducts (light purple) into the oral cavity. Magnification: x2 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
