Caption: Tonsil tissue. Light micrograph of a transverse section through tissue from a tonsil. The tonsils, part of the immune system, are large lymphatic nodules in a mucous membrane. They are arranged in a ring at the back of the throat. Each tonsil has a stratified squamous epithelium lining (outer layer) and lymphoid follicles (round, purple) with germinal areas. The tonsils contain B and T lymphocytes and macrophages, but when overloaded with viruses and bacteria they cannot cope and they have to be removed in an operation called a tonsillectomy. Magnification: x13 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
