Caption: Mouth and throat anatomy, side-view artwork. The front of the mouth is at left. Internal cavities are dark brown or red, and surrounding tissues are cream. Immediately behind the lips is the tongue, with the oral cavity between the tongue and the palate above, which curves down towards the back of the mouth. Above the palate is the nasal cavity. At the back of the mouth is the pharynx. The flap below and behind the tongue is the epiglottis, marking the start of the larynx (red). The narrowed area is the vocal cords. Below this is the trachea, leading to the lungs. Behind the trachea is the oesophagus, leading to the stomach.
