Caption: Chicken reproduction. Artwork of the outline of a female chicken, showing the internal process that produces its egg. The sequence progresses from upper left to lower right. It starts with the chicken's ovary, from which an oocyte (female egg cell) is released into the oviduct in a process called ovulation. The oviduct is shown to the right of the oocytes. Whether fertilised or not, the oocyte is covered in successive layers as it moves down the oviduct. The final layer of calcite produces an egg with a shell (lower right) ready to be laid. Domestic hens lay around 12 eggs in a clutch. If fertilised, an embryo in the egg will develop and hatch as a chick.
