Caption: Heart attack. Artwork of a human heart during a myocardial infarction (heart attack). One of the coronary arteries (bright red) has become blocked with a thrombus (blood clot, pink sphere), preventing oxygenated blood reaching an area of the heart muscle. This has caused an infarct (grey area) where heart tissue has died. Such blockages are can also be due to fatty deposits inside the coronary artery. In severe cases, heart attacks can be fatal. Blood-thinning drugs can dissolve the clot and restore the blood supply. Across top are the major blood vessels that bring blood to and from the heart. Coronary veins are bright blue.
